Great Books To Read!

*This will be updated as I think of more books, and I’ll gradually start giving them short summaries. I put them into categories as best as I could so it’s easier for you to find a book you would like, rather than just a huge list of titles/authors. Also, these are just in the order I thought of them in, I could never actually pick my favorite book or series (:
Action/Adventure/Fantasy type books (guys and girls would enjoy)
  • Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
  • Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins
  • Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare (first book is City Of Bones)
  • Percy Jackson And The Olympians series by Rick Riordan (First book is The Lightning Thief)
  • Heroes Of Olympus series by Rick Riordan (first book is The Lost Hero; read Percy Jackson series first)
  • Maximum Ride series by James Patterson (first book is Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment)

Dystopian/futuristic books - also sort of action-y, but they get their own category :P

  • Matched series by Ally Condie
  • Across The Universe series by Beth Revis
  • Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld
  • Skinned series by Robin Wasserman
  • Divergent series by Veronica Roth
  • Unwind trilogy by Neal Shusterman
  • Delirium series by Lauren Oliver

I have no idea what this category is; teens with serious problems? Depression, eating disorders, cutting, drug abuse, things like that.

  • Every book by Ellen Hopkins (Crank, Glass, Fallout, Burned, etc. I’ve read them all and they are all fantastic)
  • Laurie Halse Anderson books (Wintergirls, Speak, Catalyst, etc)
  • Cut by Patricia McCormick
  • Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

Fantasy Books with Romance — more written for girls than boys in my opinion

  • House Of Night series by P.C & Kristen Cast
  • The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater (first book is Shiver)
  • The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
  • Immortals series by Alyson Noel (first book is Evermore)
  • Fallen series by Lauren Kate
  • Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong (first book is The Summoning)
  • Darkness Rising series by Kelley Armstrong (first book is The Gathering)
  • Beastly by Alex Flinn
  • Wraith by Edie Claire (this isn’t super off the wall fantasy world, but not really realistic either…so good though! This isn’t a very well known book and it definitely should be because it’s amazing!)

Contemporary Teenage Books For Girls

  • Private series by Kate Brian
  • Privilege series by Kate Brian (read Private series first)
  • Gossip Girl series by Cecily von Ziegesar
  • In Or Out series by Claudia Gabel
  • Books by Sarah Dessen (Along For The Ride, The Truth About Forever, and Someone Like You are the only ones I’ve read, but I’ve heard the rest of her books are great too!)
  • North Of Beautiful by Justina Headley

Horror/Suspense books — I’m sure I’ve read more but these are all I remember

  • Duma Key by Steven King (this book is huge but worth it)
  • Cell by Steven King
  • Relentless by Dean Koontz
  • I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan
  • The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (not scary, exactly, but its about murder so..I guess it fits here)
  • Touch series by Laurie Faria Stolarz (first book is Deadly Little Secret) ~ not really scary either, but I think it goes in this category best.

Cultural Books I had to read for school and ended up loving

  • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Middle East - Afghanistan)
  • A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (Middle East - Afghanistan)
  • Copper Sun by Sharon Draper (Africa)
  • A Long Way Gone: Memoirs Of A Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah (Africa)
  • Sold by Patricia McCormick (Nepal)
  • Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (France) Ok so this book isn’t great, exactly, definitely not as good as any other book I’ve mentioned here, but I had to read it for school and ended up enjoying it. I wouldn’t have read it if I didn’t have to, but it was pretty good anyways.

Autobiographies/Biographies/Memoirs

  • A Child Called It and The Lost Boy by Dave Pelzer (there is also a book about his adult life but I didn’t read it)
  • Death From Child Abuse…And No One Heard by Eve Krupinski and Dana Weikel
  • The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
  • Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody

Other Amazing Books That I Didn’t Think Really Fit In Those Other Categories

  • Paper Towns by John Green
  • Looking For Alaska by John Green
  • The Fault In Our Stars by John Green — THIS WILL MAKE YOU CRY YOUR EYES OUT.
  • Boy Toy by Barry Lyga — I can’t say what it’s about without giving away the story, but basically this guy has a secret that everyone knows and it haunts him his whole teenage life.  http://barrylyga.com/novels/boy-toy/
  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett — if you don’t know what this is about you must live under a rock. Just read it.
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky — this was a really interesting book. It’s similar to John Green’ s books, but also not. I bought it from Amazon’s e-book store for $3.99 so if you’re considering it, just get it!
